Summer Recap - August

I started the month by vending my baskets at the Four County Quilters Guild Quilt Show.  The display hall was filled with beautiful handmade quilts.  Happily, quilters love baskets too!

  The CPBWG August weave was a lazy Susan double decker basket.  The pattern and hardware were from KnK Creations. 

I used fall colors and stained it to give it an autumn look. 

Summer Recap - July

July began with a full week of classes at Common Ground on the Hill held at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD.

I taught at class on weaving rib baskets.  Each student first made an egg basket.  The remainer of the week they wove a variety of rib baskets - hen, key or melon of their choice. 

Their finished baskets were shown at the annual student art show on Friday evening.

The Rice Gallery at Mc Daniel College featured a display of my Rib Baskets during the week of Common Ground classes. . 

During the July CPBWG weave, members gathered to weave small berry baskets. The guild fills the baskets with toiletries and donates them to a PA charity for their service project.  

In the afternoon, the guild wove a decorative hairband using a variety of patterns and colored reed.

Summer Recap - June 2023

To kick off summer, I participated in Carroll County's Art in the Park festival.  I had a booth featuring a wide variety of my baskets.  It was a chance to catch up with friends I hadn't seen over the winter and promote the craft of basketweaving.  

The OWLS (Outdoors Women's Life) held their annual summer retreat in Taneytown.  I taught a simple rectangle splint basket in the morning and a decorative reed wreath in the afternoon.  It was a fun day for everyone. I always look forward to working with this group of women. 

 

CPBWG Spring Retreat

 

The Central Pennsylvania Basket Weavers Guild held their spring retreat at the picturesque Gitt Memorial Library in Hanover last weekend.   Despite the rainy weather, members had a great time weaving, relaxing, and socializing.  JoAnn Kelly Catsos, nationally recognized black ash splint basketmaker, taught a variety of ash baskets over the weekend.  

I wove a black ash diamond cat head bowl. It was woven over a mushroom mold.  The completed bowl has a 2 inch square base and a 4" diameter.  

Woven Divided Tin Tote

The Pennsylvania Basket Weavers Guild met in East Berlin on Saturday to spend a day weaving and enjoying each others company.  Everyone made a divided tin tote following the kit pattern from Kathy Petronzio.  I love the blue green color scheme that she often uses in her baskets.  You can see more of her work on her website: www.kathypetronziobaskets.com 

 

Guilders Weave 2023

 Basket weavers converged on Newport News, VA. over the weekend for Guilders Weave 2023 hosted by the Tidewater Basketry Guild.  After a 2-year hiatus participants were ready to gather, weave and have fun.  Everyone did just that!

I wove a birch bark bird on Thursday evening under the direction of Carolyn Kemp.  She brought prepared birch bark strips for us to cut and weave.  Instead of using water, the birch was rubbed with vegetable oil to keep it pliable.

Jane Mc Call Brinkman taught a class on Friday using a plastic sand pail as the mold.  It included swing handle and a hardwood strip of walnut for an accent row. 

 

Kathy Petronzio's Saturday class was a Nantucket style basket.  It included a band defined by a waxed linen arrow row and embellished with seed beads sewn on at the completion of the basket.  Attaching the beads took longer than weaving the basket!  

My final class for the weekend was with Rose Glen.  I covered a gourd with alcohol dyes and then coiled a random weave of mixed fibers and wood around the top.  It was a fun way to end the weekend. 
 

I also had time to weave around a Oui jar with a wooden lid given to attendees in our "goodie" bag at check-in.  During Friday night's marketplace, I bought Anne Bowers' Lightening Biscuit Basket kit.   I finished it as well!

January Guild Weave

The Central Pennsylvania Basket Weavers Guild held their first gathering of 2023.    

Guild member Joanne Sheriff led the group as we wove a wine tote complete with a wooden saddle for wine glasses.  

After the basket was woven, an overlay design was added.  I choose to use a purple and teal blue to highlight the basket. 

In addition to weaving a basket, members participated in a gift swap, several drawings and lunch provided by the guild.  A member's name was drawn for a $25 supply gift certificate.  The 2022 UFO challenge concluded with a drawing for the years "kitty".      It was a fun day for everyone who attended.
