Guilders Weave 2024

Tidewater Basketry Guild hosted the 25th Guilders Weave over the weekend in Newport News Virgina.  Nearly 180 weavers from 17 states came together to weave, have fun and celebrate for the 4-day event.

Thursday evening, I made 2 Maple Swirl ornaments under the direction of Karen Kotecki.  The swirl uses an overlap technique that takes the spokes from straight up to overlapped, wrapped and tucked.

I began Friday weaving a Large Corner Basket designed by Cheryl Thomas.  The finished basket has three sides, but the actual wooden base has five sides.  To accent the beachy color scheme, a ceramic sand dollar is added to the front.

Later in the day I continued the beach theme by weaving an elbow basket, Whisp by Pam Milet.

It was a full day of coiling on Saturday to complete the Blue Bayou coiled rim gourd.  Debbie Wilson led the class and encouraged each participant to put their own twist on the design. It incorporated 2 colors of paper cord, variegated round reed and waxed thread.

I concluded the weekend in a Fun and Fancy Jars class led by Jane Brinkman. I covered 2 Oui jars and made a loop pocket to hold a small wooden spoon.  She provided wooden lids for us to complete the deign.
